On this side of New Year’s Day, the release of The Hunger Games doesn’t seem quite so far away. Ok, it’s still close to three months away, but we now exist within the same year as the release of the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ popular novel and that’s something. This optimistic outlook is my attempt to set the tone for these new stills from the film, some of which, while technically new, seem familiar to scenes shown in the trailer. But we'll certainly take whatever looks we can get at the film while we wait for March, and there is one that looks like it's from a scene we haven't glimpsed yet.

The Games, which aren’t really games, but more a fight-to-the-death battle among kids from various districts in a future-set society for the entertainment of the rich Capital, begin this March, with Jennifer Lawrence set to play the lead, Katniss Everdeen. She’s featured in these first two photos, one of which has her looking speechless (that may prove not to be the case once we see the actual scene) as Elizabeth Banks’ Effie Trinket smiles at the reaping, either clueless of or intentionally ignoring the dark nature of the games from the perspective of the players, as she pushes the microphone toward Katniss. The second one has Katniss being escorted by guards in a location that most likely takes place within the Capital (click on each image to see it in high-res).

This next one has Katniss and her hunting partner and friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth) seated in the grass, possibly taking a break from hunting to have some breakfast or lunch. I’m fairly sure this still is from the scene glimpsed near the beginning of the trailer.

And last is an image that looks the least familiar. At least, I don’t recall seeing this scene in the trailer. It features Katniss’ Games mentor Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), her fashion designer Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta (Josh Hutchersan) as they chat. Random speculation: Perhaps Katniss is being interviewed by the press or something, which leaves these three to wait and talk amongst themselves.

There are a couple more, two of which look like they may have actually been stills pulled from the trailer, including the one of Katniss in the tube. You can check those out, along with bigger versions of the above photos in our Hunger Games image gallery here.

The Hunger Games releases in theaters on March 23, 2012. More on the film can be found in our Blend Film Database.
