There’s a quiet sort of quirkiness to Greta Gerwig’s style humor, which we’ve seen in some of the films in which she’s appeared, including the Arthur remake, and her amusing supporting role in No Strings Attached. She’s among the stars of Whit Stillman’s Damsels in Distress, which arrives in theaters this weekend, and later this year we’ll see her in Lola Versus.
Gerwig will play the title role in Fox Searchlight’s upcoming film, which debuts this June. Based on the trailer (via iTunes), Lola looks like a great role for Gerwig, who plays a 29-year-old whose fiancé dumps her not long before the wedding. As you’ll see in the video below, Lola is thrust back into single-life, which apparently results in a lot of odd situations...
As the trailer notes, Fox Searchlight is also the studio that brought us 500 Days of Summer. While the stories seem different, there is the emphasis on romance, which may be a bit of a roller-coaster ride for this character.
From what I’ve seen of her work, I think Gerwig has a lot of potential, and has proven to be especially funny. Lola Versus looks like it could be just the right comedy to showcase her talent. The trailer sells funny and smart, with just a little bit of goofiness as it explores the frustrating world of dating for one newly single woman on the verge of turning 30.
Directed by Daryl Wein, Lola Versus arrives in theaters June 8th. In addition to Gerwig, the cast includes Joel Kinnaman, Hamish Linklater, Debra Winger, and Bill Pullman. Also among the cast is Zoe Lister-Jones, who co-wrote the film along with Wein.
