We can hardly stand still waiting for the debut of Michael Bay’s next film, a dramatic look at the fall of the Mayan culture. Just kidding! I’m talking about Transformers: Age of Extinction, and even though it’s merely seven months away, we still haven’t seen any explosions, or even any still frames of a shock wave turning a building to rubble. But the biggest, baddest metal hero this side of Gypsy Danger has been revealed, and Optimus Prime is looking even more badass than ever before.
Well, I guess the badassery of the look is solely related to how invested everyone was in the design before. While there’s no telling if this cover, via Empire shows the way the robotic OG will look for the entire film, or if this is just some stripped down look he takes on before heading to the paint shop. Mostly gone are the big blues and bright red flames we’re so accustomed to, replaced by more metallic colors and tints, with much of the paneling stripped down, revealing more of Optimus’ inner workings. And he’s looking pretty angry, so a lot of those inner workings are probably rage-molded, or some other highfalutin idea Bay and screenwriter Ehren Kruger cooked up.
It definitely looks different from the previously released vehicle shot seen below.
And from what little we know about the plot, it sounds like Optimus Prime will have his gear-infused hands full. If rumors are correct, big baddie Lockdown has a whole host of decommissioned Transformers, including the dinobots, that are brought back to life by Optimus. Mark Wahlberg will play a mechanic who, along with his daughter (Nicola Peltz), makes a discovery that turns the Transformers world as they know it upside down.
The cover also showcases Wahlberg’s pensive stare, which looks like it was Photoshopped to push his eyes closer together. Peltz looks predictably feminine while Jack Reynor stands ready to fight. Or to run. Or to scream. I’m not sure. The rest of the all-star cast includes T.J. Miller, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer, Titus Welliver, Peter Cullen and a cast of Chinese actors helping to diversify the franchise that Shia LaBeouf put in his rearview.
It looks like these performers are involved in the exclusive behind-the-scenes shot that Empire also unveiled, which features Bay working some wire effects holding a car full of people at a precarious angle.
You can catch Optimus and Wahlberg going toe to toe against the Decepticons when Age of Extinction hits theaters on June 17, 2014.
