When I interviewed director Derek Cianfrance two years ago for his film Blue Valentine I took the opportunity to ask him about his next project, The Place Beyond The Pines. At the time he told me, that the movie was the story of fathers and sons, sins of the past, and motorcycles and guns. Watching the film's first trailer it would seem he was very accurate in his description.
While the film made its world premiere back in September at the Toronto International Film Festival, it will be heading into limited release in March, and Focus Features has just released a brand new trailer to promote it. Check it out below, courtesy of Yahoo!
The film got some positive buzz out of TIFF, but our own Sean O'Connell wasn't a big fan. Calling the movie his biggest disappointment of the festival (much like how Katey's was Imogene, which just picked up a release date yesterday), Sean said only one of the film's storylines is interesting and "barely holds your interest," while the movie as a whole"reaches too far to make a point about how the vicious cycle of violence tends to repeat itself with tragic results."
Written by Cianfrance, Ben Coccio, and Darius Marder, The Place Beyond The Pines tells the story of a motorcycle stunt professional named Luke (Ryan Gosling) who discovers that he has a baby son. Wanting to do everything he can to provide for his child, he turns to robbing banks to make money, but doing so forces his life to collide with a cop-turned-politican named Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper). The supporting cast is packed with talent, as Rose Byrne, Dane DeHaan, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Ben Mendelsohn and Bruce Greenwood co-star.
Look for the movie in theaters on March 29th.
