We now all know that Andy Serkis played a rather pivotal role in the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was his deep, dark voice that guided us through the clip - and now he has revealed a few more tidbits regarding his character, while also dismissing some of the rumors that have been circulating. This includes rebuffing the allegation that he will be playing multiple characters in the sci-fi extravaganza.
Andy Serkis made his remarks while chatting to Entertainment Weekly about his work alongside J.J. Abrams for the seventh installment in the beloved sci-fi franchise. After being asked about the rumors that he might utilize his performance capture ability to play multiple characters in the movie, Serkis insisted that is "not true at all" before adding, "I can say I only play one character."
At the moment, and when you consider just how gruff and ominous his voice-over for The Force Awakens was, it feels like a safe assumption to say that Serkis’ one character will probably be a bit of baddy. In fact, Serkis added a few more comments regarding his presence in the film, insisting that his voice in the teaser hadn’t been digitally manipulated and it "is the character." You wouldn’t want him to read you a bed time tale with that tone. Just to remind everyone of how intimidating Andy Serkis sounded in the teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens you can watch it below. Another reason to do so too is that it is also ruddy brilliant.
But what else did Andy Serkis have to say regarding his character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Well, as you could have probably guessed, he tried his upmost to remain incredibly tight-lipped, as he didn’t want to receive rebuke from the bosses at Lucasfilm and Disney. After being quizzed about his character’s history, Serkis took his time, emitted a small chuckle, and then carefully explained, "I have to be very careful about how I answer these questions. The character… he’s been through some stuff." Let’s just assume that when he says "stuff" he actually means "an intergalactic civil war between the forces of good and evil." Or maybe he just means that he actually had a pretty distant relationship with his father. I’m guessing it’s something to do with the former.
Andy Serkis’ addition to the already impressive Star Wars: The Force Awakens ensemble should prove to be a masterstroke by J.J. Abrams. Not only is he one of the most respected actors currently plying his trade in the movie business, but whether he is masquerading as an ape or Gollum thanks to performance enhancing technology or simply playing a character using only his physical attributes, Serkis brings a raw, intense complexity to every character he portrays. And Star Wars: The Force Awakens will only benefit from having him on the roster.
