Star Wars may be taking over theaters in December, but it’s not waiting that long to invade television. While Jimmy Kimmel Live already had the galaxy far, far away show up on set last night, there’s going to be an even larger force on his stage next month when the entire show will be dedicated to The Force Awakens.
The special show will take place on November 23rd and will include The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams, as well as new cast members Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and John Boyega. While the marketing machine has been in full force up to this point, the majority of it has been done via trailers and posters, and remarkably little has been done through actual human interviews. Kimmel will have the first real opportunity to question the young stars and potentially learn more about their characters and the film.
Who are we kidding? The reason Abrams is probably there in the first place is to play chaperone and make sure nobody talks. This thing has been locked up pretty tight, and when the episode finally hits, they’ll be less than a month from the release. They’ll be in super lockdown by then.
Why does Jimmy Kimmel get the honor of getting all the Star Wars stars on his show? Well, he’s got the power of the Mouse House behind him, of course. Kimmel’s show airs on ABC, which, like Lucasfilm, is owned by Disney. This isn’t the first time Kimmel has scored the big interview just for being on the right network. He got nearly the entire Avengers: Age of Ultron cast earlier this year for all the same reasons. No word yet on whether or not the Star Wars crew will play Family Feud or another game show instead.
To be fair to Kimmel, the Disney connection probably isn’t the only reason he ends up with these gigs. He really seems to be a genuine geek who loves all this stuff as much as the rest of us. As part of a Halloween episode last night his entire crew dressed in Star Wars costumes, including the host as Princess Leia, while he interviewed Harrison Ford in a Hot Dog costume, because why not?
We’ll be setting the DVR’s just in case we get any new Star Wars: The Force Awakens news. At this point it’s like a drug and we need to keep getting our regular fix. Thank god there are more movies planned so we can keep the news flowing, even after this one finally comes out December 18th.
