Terror Phones Home

The next time someone asks you what the scariest weapon in your house is, you can stop staring at the kitchen knives and the rusty hammer in the tool box for answers. Look no further than Alexander Graham Bell's evil invention, the telephone.

The latest movie to capitalize on the fear provoked by phones is When A Stranger Calls, a remake of the 1979 scarefest. Empire Online reports that Camilla Belle will star in the leading role, as a babysitter being tortured by a series of anonymous phonecalls probing her about the children's safety. When she finally calls the police, she finds out the calls are coming from inside their house. I've never seen the original, but it would be a funny twist if the children were the ones screwing with the babysitter all along. I suspect that won't be the outcome. And if it is, I've just ruined it for all of you.

Belle is not a big star yet, but she has made her mark in indie oddball flicks such as The Ballad Of Jack & Rose and the upcoming suicide-comedy Chumscrubber. Simon West will direct When A Stranger Calls, previously tackling Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. The film will begin shooting this July, and hits theaters in early 2006. In the mean time, reap the benefits of Caller ID.
