Winona Ryder, Martin Landau, Martin Short And Catherine O'Hara Cast In Frankenweenie

Like many directors, Tim Burton likes to work with the same actors over and over. In fact, Burton likes doing it so much that he hasn't made a movie without either Johnny Depp or Helena Bonham Carter since 1996 (he's made seven films in that stretch and four of them starred both actors). In his next project, a stop-motion, full-length version of his 1984 short Frankenweenie, he's once again getting bringing some old favorites back - just not Depp and Bonham Carter (yet).

Deadline reports that Winona Ryder (Beetle Juice, Edward Scissorhands), Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!), and Catherine O'Hara (Beetle Juice) have all joined the cast of the Burton co-written/produced animated film. Most of the roles they will be playing are not in the original short. Though there are no character details available, Ryder will play Elsa and Landau will play Mr. Rzykruski while both Short and O'Hara will be taking on five roles each, the most notable of which are the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Frankenstein, the parents of the films hero, Victor.

With no director attached and the release date a year-and-a-half away, I'm still holding out hope that Tim Burton decides to make this one himself. Though it's not really an original story - both Mary Shelley and James Whale would role over in their graves if I said it was - it would at least allow him to get back to his roots instead of doing another Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or Alice in Wonderland. His next project, Dark Shadows, begins shooting in January, but hopefully the director can find room in his schedule for this one too.
