Writer Brought On To Relaunch ReBoot

We first told you about plans to make a big screen adaptation of ReBoot almost a year ago. The idea was to take one of our favorite cartoons, which took place inside a computer, and give writing duties to the public. Writers would pitch ideas and fans would vote on what they liked. We were skeptical to say the least.

It’s a year later and that writing idea has delivered… actually, it’s only delivered a comic book, which premiered online last week. “Paradigms Lost tells the story of the typically-fighting between the Guardians and Codemasters, who set aside their combat to fight a viral threat that threatens their world.

Meanwhile, on the movie front, an official writer has been brought on board to pen the script. Jon Cooksey. Cooksey has typically done some family friendly stuff like Rugrats and Halloweentown II, which should give you a feel of the direction Rainmaker Studios will be going with a ReBoot movie. I’m not sure if bringing one single writer on board means the fan participation element wasn’t working (we didn’t think it would for a film story) or if he will be forced to accept the input from fans who could be the same people who keep Jim Belushi employed.

It’s been almost a year and I still don’t get this whole model Rainmaker is using for ReBoot. I loved the original cartoon and I have hopes a movie could be good, but I just don’t get how they are going about it. It still feels like they don’t either, with press statements like, ”The idea is to relaunch in a brand way,” still punctuating the studio’s vague position. I mean, come on, at the very least they could have used the word “reboot” and gotten the obvious play on their title in.

Here’s hoping the “relaunch” and Jon Cooksey can capture some of the magic of the original series.
