One of the coolest things about superhero fiction is the fact that a broad range of characters can take on individual mantles. Dick Grayson can become Batman, James Rhodes can become Iron Man, and Connor Hawke can become Green Arrow. With that in mind, one of the most iconic superhero mantles of all time is Spider-Man. Although Peter Parker has reigned supreme as the quintessential movie Spider-Man for quite some time, that's apparently about to change. Sony Pictures recently announced a brand new animated Spider-Man movie for 2018, and it seems that they will finally give Miles Morales his time to shine in the spotlight. Check out the studios' tweet below to see for yourself.
If you found yourself having a bad day for some reason, then I have a feeling that Sony Pictures' announcement should perk you right up. An animated movie starring Miles Morales? Sign me up. The character has become a fan-favorite aspect of the Spider-Man lore ever since he debuted in the comics back in 2011, and he has had the opportunity to headline numerous other projects -- Ultimate Spider-Man arguably being the most notable of the bunch. He was an instantly striking departure from Peter Parker primarily because of his race (he is of black and Hispanic descent), but he has since gone on to carve out a very specific and distinctive niche as a wholly unique character that is completely different from his predecessor.
However, although we know that an animated movie centering on Miles Morales is on the way, Sony Pictures has played somewhat coy regarding specific details associated with the project. We are aware that Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey will share the director's chair on the film, but no concrete details regarding the plot or supporting characters involved in the production have been announced yet. Considering the sheer scope and depth of Spider-Man's rogues gallery, we have a distinct feeling that he could potentially face off against an entire army of villains.
Of course, there is ONE vital piece of information that Sony Pictures was willing to provide fans: the release date. It seems that the upcoming animated adventure will debut in December of 2018. They don't call it the most wonderful time of the year for nothing, I suppose.
That may look like a long time to wait, but it's worth remembering all of the great Spider-Man fiction waiting right around the corner in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Tom Holland's Peter Parker slated to take center stage this summer when Spider-Man: Homecoming finally debuts, we have a feeling that the Golden Age of Spider-Man movies is about to begin. It's a fantastic time for nerds, isn't it?
CinemaBlend will bring you more information related to the upcoming animated Spider-Man movie as more details related to the project become available to us. The film is currently slated to debut on December 21, 2018.
