While some celebrities seem always to hog the limelight, others come and go -- only making a splash when they want to. In this instance, there's little question that Tobey Maguire is the latter. The actor has generally avoided the spotlight in the years since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man franchise came to an end, and he has proven himself quite picky when it comes to the projects that he takes. He must finally be fairly confident in his abilities, though, because he has officially signed on to adapt Blood on Snow as his first ever feature film as a director.
According to Deadline, Tobey Maguire has officially been tapped to direct an adaptation of Jo Nesbo's novella Blood on Snow, directing from a script written by Nesbo himself. The story of Blood on Snow focuses on a career hitman who falls in love with a woman who he is supposed to kill -- who also happens to be the wife of his boss. Few other details have surfaced in regards to plot or overall casting decisions, but the small scale of Blood on Snow seems like a great place to give Tobey Maguire his directorial debut.
It's honestly fascinating just to learn that Tobey Maguire has such a big project coming down the pipeline because we haven't heard much from him in several years. His last high-profile movie role was his performance as Nick Carraway in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby. Beyond that, recent years have been defined by smaller and more intimate roles -- such as his performance as Bobby Fischer in Pawn Sacrifice and Devin Morehouse in the (criminally underrated) miniseries The Spoils of Babylon. With the former Spider-Man actor set to swing his way into the director's chair for the very first time with this upcoming adaptation of Blood on Snow, it's entirely possible that we may be in the midst of a major career transition for Maguire. That is, if he's any good at directing.
With that in mind, we're incredibly excited to see what Tobey Maguire will do with Blood on Snow, as there's a long tradition of actors becoming some of the most prominent and talented filmmakers in Hollywood. Maguire has a lengthy resume as an actor and producer, so directing apparently seems like the next logical step for his career. If successful, he could potentially join the ranks of performers like Ben Affleck, Clint Eastwood, and Mel Gibson as some of the industry's most reliable auteurs.
We will keep you up-to-date with all of the latest and greatest information concerning Tobey Maguire's involvement in Blood on Snow as more details are made available to us. For now, you can catch the actor's vocal chops in The Boss Baby, which is currently number one at the box office, and there are a lot of other great Tobey Maguire-less releases coming up.
