The Fast and the Furious franchise has plenty of a-list talent, and the franchise itself has even helped to up the ante of some of its leads' star power. With this in mind, it's not surprising that the cast might have other a-listers in mind for roles these days, but the guy Tyrese Gibson really wants for Fast 9 may be a bit surprising. In a recent interview, Gibson revealed he has always wanted Matt Damon for a Fast and the Furious role. Here's what he had to say:
For the last couple years, I've been talking about Matt Damon. I would love for Matt Damon to come in and be a part of this franchise. Matt Damon is already a part of the Bourne franchise, which is also a Universal property, so it'd be easy to bring him right over.
Matt Damon has done action before, most notably in the Jason Bourne movies, as Tyrese Gibson himself noted. There are also a lot of car chases in those movies, so I suppose you could say he's experienced. He's also not a man who shies away from franchise movies, as he has again appeared in the Jason Bourne flicks but also in the Ocean's franchise films. As such, Tyrese Gibson's hopes about the future of the franchise beyond The Fate of the Furious aren't so far-fetched. Regardless, despite his comments to EW, the ninth movie really hasn't started moving forward less, and we definitely don't know whether or not Matt Damon will cameo or star.
Still, Tyrese Gibson does make it seem as if he has some clout on the set of The Fate of the Furious. The actor also revealed that he has been able to make some calls and at least get his ideas in front of the right people during the years the Fast movies have been made.
I haven't really thought about what the future looks like for Roman. But I'm hoping to be able to continue to throw my ideas out there around who should join the franchise.
Over a year ago, The Fate of the Furious' Vin Diesel revealed that the studio is already looking to make Fast 9 and Fast 10, and those are supposed to drop in 2019 and 2021, respectively. At one point it looked as if the franchise could wrap up after the death of series lead Paul Walker, but at this juncture the films are still going strong. Perhaps all the next movie will really need is a little Matt Damon to freshen things up a bit. Regardless, we still have a bit of time to wait for Fast 8 to premiere, so we probably shouldn't be thinking too far ahead to Fast 9, yet. You can catch The Fate of the Furious when it premieres on April 14. In the meantime, you can take a look at what else Tyrese has said about the making of the flick or take a look at our full guide.
