Is James Cameron Going To Be Involved In The New Terminator Movie? Here's What He Said

Young Terminator from Genysis

If you've been paying any attention to the world of TV and film production, you'll notice one trend that is dictating what types of projects are produced: nostalgia. Moviegoers young and old long to return to a simpler time, and it seems like no property is safe from a long awaited sequel or reboot. This includes the Terminator franchise, which had its latest run back in 2015. A new installment in the franchise is being developed now, and Arnold Schwarzenegger has expressed his interest in returning to his most iconic role. But will legendary director James Cameron be interested in once again getting behind the camera with the property for the first time since Terminator 2? He just might.

James Cameron has been doing a fair amount of press lately. Aside from making some controversial comments about Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, he also revealed whether or not he may be returning for the next Terminator movie.

I would say, at this point, it's looking very likely. We're starting to get the pieces pulled together, and we'll probably have something to say on that fairly soon.

Well, this would certainly be exciting. It looks like James Cameron is interested in returning for the next Terminator installment, although he's unable to confirm anything at this juncture. Fingers crossed he finally comes back to one of the most iconic properties of 1990s.

James Cameron's statement to EW is sure to excite hardcore Terminator fans. Because while there have been a total of five Terminator films produced, Cameron was only involved in the first two (aka the best ones). If Cameron was able to once again get into bed with the property, then a bonafide hit sequel may be possible. Considering what he was able to accomplish given the limited special and CGI effects of the 90s, he could really create something fantastic if he signs up for another film.

Of course, James Cameron's busy schedule has the potential to stop this from happening. He's currently got his hands full with the long gestating Avatar sequels, of which there will apparently be four. The sequel for his 2009 megahit has been delayed time and time again, although now it looks like he'll finally begin filming the sequels -- some of which will be filmed at the same time. And if more roadblocks happen in filming, as blockbusters are wont to do, then he may be just too busy to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger in another Terminator movie.

Regardless, it does seem like a new Terminator is in our future. Arnold Schwarzenegger has stated that Terminator 6 will begin filming this coming March, it's just a matter of whether or not they can officially book James Cameron in some capacity.

We'll be sure to update you on Terminator 6 as details become public. In the meantime, check out our 2017 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
