Ahead of it's upcoming release, the full trailer for I, Tonya starring Margot Robbie has dropped. The film chronicles the life and career of infamous figure skater Tonya Harding and her tragic downfall. The trailer puts the spotlight on Margot Robbie's performance and makes it clear that this is her show. In fact, Margot Robbie looks to be having a blast in her portrayal of Harding in this stranger than fiction tale. Check it out, below.
The first thing that stands out in this trailer is Margot Robbie's performance in a role that she clearly immersed herself in. Her accent and mannerisms show off how she inhabited this real life person who became a larger than life character. Margot Robbie's Tonya Harding is breaking the fourth wall in this film in a choice that should allow the actress to shine and audiences to connect to this flawed and maligned person. We are seeing things from Tonya's perspective, which lends a complexity to her story that doesn't excuse her actions, but shows that they don't exist in a vacuum. This trailer shows that this film will not only tell the story of Tonya Harding that we have become familiar with over the years, but also the story of how Tonya Harding sees herself and the circumstances of her life. As she says in the trailer, "everyone has their own truth."
Part of what makes this trailer so entertaining is that it is taking a tragic story and finding the comedic elements in it, without losing sight of the sadness. In the trailer, we also get to see some of Tonya Harding's childhood, being raised by the classic pageant mom in Allison Janney's cruel and manipulative, LaVona Golden. This blending of tragedy and comedy filled with inept and folksy characters bumbling their way through a caper gave me strong vibes comparing to a Coen Brothers film.
Early reviews of the film have been very strong and there has been a ton of praise for Margot Robbie and Allison Janney's performances. If this trailer is any indication, it isn't hard to see why. This movie looks like an absolute blast despite the tragedy of the real life events that inspired it. In the trailer, Harding says that America needs someone to hate, but there is a good chance they will have someone to love in Margot Robbie come Oscar season.
