We're still about two full months away from what is going to likely be one of the biggest movies of an already big box office year. Frozen II is the sequel to one of the most popular movies ever, and there's every indication the sequel is going to be just as big.
Frozen wasn't only a hit in North America. It was a massive international hit as well. The original movie made nearly $50 million in China, and the second largest nation in the global box office is likely expected to be a strong source of ticket sales for the sequel as well. And that's where Frozen II's newest poster comes in. Josh Gad himself was blown away by the beautiful new image, and you probably will be as well.
In celebration of China's Mid Autumn Festival, which was this past weekend, Disney released the poster. The lighting of paper lanterns is a popular part of celebrating the occasion, and the poster is done entirely in the style of paper art, and it includes Elsa and Anna lighting a paper lantern themselves which can be seen at the top of the poster floating into the air. Perhaps Tangled and Frozen really are connected.
It really is a well designed poster that doesn't look like anything we see very often. This would look good on any wall and would almost certainly draw your attention if you walked past it at your local theater.
While we may not have the cultural connection to a poster like this, that doesn't make it less beautiful. Movie posters are an art form that doesn't get enough credit in general, but this piece specifically wouldn't be out of place in an art gallery. The only thing that would look better would be seeing this image recreated in actual paper art.
Frozen II itself is looking equally beautiful when it comes to animation. Disney raises the bar with every subsequent release. It's been two years since we've seen a feature film from Walt Disney Animation, so the studio has had more time than usual to up the game.
As far as what the new poster says about Frozen II, it doesn't tell us much. We do see the diamond shaped crystals floating in the air which we have seen in the trailers, and are clearly part of the plot, but it has yet to be officially revealed what they mean.
Frozen II will follow Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf as they leave home to go on an adventure to learn the origin of Elsa's magic powers.. Possibly related, we'll be learning a lot more about Anna and Elsa's family history. Even Rachel Wood will be joining the cast as Elsa and Anna's mother in flashback sequences.
The first Frozen made $1 billion at the global box office and so Frozen II certainly has a solid chance to be Disney's sixth billion dollar movie of the year. It will hit theaters November 22.
