Writer-director Jeff Nichols has been building a solid reputation as a compelling new voice in impendent cinema with his first two films, the family feud drama Shotgun Stories and mind-bending thriller Take Shelter, both of which offered harrowing drama with a powerhouse performance by menacing Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon at their core. Nichols' latest effort Mud not only reunites him with Shannon but also boasts a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Sam Shepard and Martha Marcy May Marlene's Sarah Paulson.
The original drama penned by Nichols centers on a charming but dangerous fugitive called Mud (McConaughey), who forms an unexpected bond with two Arkansas teens played by Tree of Life's Tye Sheridan and newcomer Jacob Lofland. The boys help Mud evade the bounty hunters and lawmen who are hunting him, and aim to aid him in reconnecting with his lady love Juniper (Witherspoon). Shannon, in a supporting role this time, plays the father figure of Lofland, an uncle who is a professional oyster-diver.

The film made its world premiere last May at the Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the prestigious Palme d'Or prize. Now nearly three months later, Mud is at last close to securing domestic distribution. Variety reports Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions have entered into "advanced discussions" to buy the feature's U.S. rights, and hopes to release Mud next year. Roadside Attractions, of which Lionsgate own 43%, has recently distributed such fascinating and challenging films as Project Nim, Margin Call, Tonight You're Mine and Friends With Kids. So their interest in Mud speaks well for Nichol's latest.
