As David Cassidy said in the conversation, which was held two months before he passed away, the entertainer didn't actually have dementia. Instead, David Cassidy dealt with his alcohol addiction in the days leading up to this death.
The confession was found in A&E's documentary David Cassidy: The Last Session, which will air next week. Alcohol abuse is something David Cassidy struggled with for years, which resulted in three DUIs in five years. When the former teen idol went to rehab in 2014, he claimed his drinking days were now behind him. But that wasn't necessarily true, according to People. The fateful call that revealed the truth to the producers came shortly after Cassidy was rushed to the hospital, after becaming ill in the recording studio. When he called the producers to let them know what happened, he said,
I have a liver disease. There is no sign of me having dementia at this stage of my life. It was complete alcohol poisoning. The fact is that I lied about my drinking, I did this to myself to cover up the sadness and the emptiness.
This admission of David Cassidy's continued alcohol abuse during the final months of his life came as a shock to both the producers of the upcoming documentary and the actor's family, which includes his kids, Katie and Beau. Everyone assumed he was sober since his stint in rehab. That wasn't so.
