After earning Superbowl rings for the team’s performance in the 2011 season, the New York Giants found themselves in a tough position. Monetarily, they could not afford to keep some of their most prominent and beloved players, and unfortunately running back Brandon Jacobs, due to a combination of a salary cap and age, was a player chosen to take one for the team. Back in March, Jacobs signed with the San Francisco 49ers; however, when fan Joseph Armento found out his hero was leaving New York, he decided to do something about it.
So, the 6-year-old put together his life savings—a whopping $3.36 and had his mother, Julie, help him compose a letter to the popular player. It seems like the little tyke hasn’t quite grasped the concept of the salary cap in sports, because he told the 29-year-old NFL player the money was to help him to go be a Giant.
When Jacobs got the letter in the mail, he was so touched he sent the image out to his followers on Twitter also stating he was totally emotional upon opening the appreciative note.
“I almost cried, I am still trying to hold it in. I may have to pay him a surprise visit.”
The player later spoke out about taking the kid out for a meal with his own 5-year-old son. Whether or not the visit is ever actually initiated, the whole correspondence is the kind of story that is truly touching and, for once, Twitter has proven the perfect forum for the news. It’s too bad $3.66 is not enough to keep Jacobs in New York for one more year.
