Earlier this week, Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman announced they were separating. The two didn’t offer any reasons or give any hints as to why they were calling it quits. Even their closest friends have expressed shock at the thought of the longterm relationship ending.
DeVito and Perlman first met as young actors in the early 1970s. He was performing in a Broadway play. She went to see a different performer. They chatted for a long time after the show, and within two weeks, they moved in together. The wedding came in 1982, and three children followed within the next several years. All are grown and out of the house at this point, but their absence makes the end of the relationship no less somber from the outside.
Perlman looked anything but somber today as TMZ photographers took snapshots of the actress without her wedding ring on for the first time. She laughed and smiled like a woman getting her first true sense of freedom in four decades, but it’s still unclear whether that satisfaction will prove brief or last over the long haul.
What do you think? Are Danny and Rhea actually going to follow through and get a divorce after thirty years of marriage, or will they eventually realize they miss each other and figure out a way to make their union work? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
