Heading into tonight’s X Factor Semi-Finals Results Show, it was widely assumed the girls from Simon Cowell’s group Fifth Harmony would find themselves eliminated, leaving longtime frontrunners Emblem 3, Tate Stevens and Carly Rose Sonenclar to battle it out for the title. Fortunately or unfortunately, that didn’t happen. Fifth Harmony shockingly vaulted over Emblem 3 to make the finals.

On the one hand, there’s something pretty cool about the group everyone wrote off surprising fans, beating expectations and carving out a place for itself in the finals. On the other hand, there’s a reason why Fifth Harmony was and remains the underdog. The girls haven’t been as popular with fans, haven’t been as popular with the judges and don’t forecast as well into the future as an act capable of selling records.

I really like Fifth Harmony. I’ve voted for them several times during the competition, but I’m not sure I’m happy with today’s results. Emblem 3 is legitimately capable of putting out a record that would get radio airplay and sell a lot of copies. The guys have consistently improved throughout the competition, and part of me thinks they really deserved to make the finals.

What do you think? Did X Factor viewers make the right call with the surprise elimination this evening or did the wrong group go home? Let us know your thoughts by voting in the poll below…
