Only two seasons are left in the saga of HBO's Game of Thrones, and we have less than twenty episodes of action in the Seven Kingdoms left before the show comes to an end. Season 7 won't hit the airwaves until summer 2017, but we've gotten some spoilers about what is currently filming to tide us over. Now, a rumor has hit the web about a new face who may have joined the cast of Game of Thrones, and it's a doozy. UFC Champion Conor McGregor has reportedly agreed to appear on Game of Thrones.
If the rumor is accurate, the Irish fighter will make his grand Game of Thrones debut in one of the two remaining seasons. He was reportedly contacted by a Game of Thrones director who also happens to be a huge fan of the UFC. Given that Conor McGregor is arguably the biggest name in the UFC thanks to both his recent victories in the ring and his colorful personality in the media, he would be a natural pick for a UFC fan. McGregor even showed up on Conan to show off his fighting abilities and nearly kick Conan O'Brien's head off. All things considered, he could be a solid addition to Game of Thrones. Kicking heads off would be a valuable skill to have in Westeros nowadays.
The report of Conor McGregor's attachment to Game of Thrones Season 7 or Season 8 comes from the Irish newspaper The Sunday Life (via Metro UK), and it has yet to be confirmed. If true, I'd put my money on McGregor appearing in Season 7. The directors for Season 7 have already been selected, but the same can't be said for Season 8. Matt Shakman is the only Season 7 director who hasn't yet helmed an episode of Game of Thrones; perhaps he's using his big Game of Thrones break to bring in a favorite UFC fighter.
It's hard to guess at this point just what kind of character Conor McGregor would play if he did appear on Game of Thrones. The show has officially outpaced George R.R. Martin's books, so even readers don't have an advantage when it comes to speculation on the future of the series. His fighting background means that he would likely play somebody who gets pretty violent. Still, we probably don't have to worry about the Mountain being recast yet again. McGregor is a fierce fighter, but he's also a UFC Lightweight who stands at less than 6 feet tall and weighs 155 pounds. He can definitely pack a punch; he just can't believably replace Hafthor Julius Bjornsson as the Mountain.
Conor McGregor has been spotted sparring with the current actor who plays the Mountain, and filming for Game of Thrones Season 7 has been taking place in Ireland. He could make sense as an addition to the series when it returns to the airwaves. We'll have to wait and see.
Interestingly, Conor McGregor has a connection of sorts to a Game of Thrones actor other than Hafthor Julius Bjornsson. He voiced a character in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, which also happened to feature Kit Harington as the villain. Who knows? Maybe Conor McGregor could show up on Game of Thrones to join Harington as Jon Snow for some live action battles.
