Game of Thrones finally returned to the airwaves on July 16 with the Season 7 premiere, "Dragonstone." We only have a couple of seasons left, and the key players are finally coming together as the Great War approaches. While Cersei currently sits on the Iron Throne, there's no guarantee that she'll keep it now that she has enemies on nearly all sides. Actress Maisie Williams has weighed in on who she thinks should sit the Iron Throne when the series comes to an end in Season 8, saying this:
I've always had this fantasy in the back of my head -- I don't think it's a good ending and fans might not like it -- but that somebody would sit on the Iron Throne at the end and then they whip their face off and it's Arya instead. I've always had that dream.
Maisie Williams has played Arya Stark on Game of Thrones ever since the very first episode of the series, and she apparently hopes to stick around until the very last episode. Her fantasy ending involves Arya using the face-changing trick she learned from the Faceless Men at the House of Black and White to wind up on the Iron Throne at the end of all things. Her reveal to EW indicates that she doesn't think it would be the very best way for the series to end, but she's clearly put some thought into it.
After seeing Arya use her face-changing ability to annihilate House Frey, it really doesn't feel like there are many limits to what she can pull off. She can infiltrate just about anywhere, and she clearly hasn't gotten over her thirst for revenge. If she manages to kill off more of her enemies by infiltrating their ranks, she could take out some key players in the game. I'm not sure that a cliffhanger finale that reveals Arya on the Iron Throne before cutting to black would be what fans want, but it would definitely have people talking for years to come.
While I doubt Game of Thrones would really end on Arya using her face-changing abilities to win the Iron Throne for herself, I could definitely see somebody having a dream or a vision that involves Arya pulling off a face as she sits on the Iron Throne. Given that she spared the Frey girl so that a Stark would get credit for avenging the Red Wedding, word will undoubtedly spread that she can steal and change faces without any trouble at all. That would certainly be nightmare fuel for any who have made enemies of the Starks.
We'll have to wait and see what happens. Arya is currently heading south on a mission to murder Cersei, but there's a good chance that something will happen to send her up north to Winterfell and her siblings once more. Only time will tell.
