Zach Galifianakis' Between Two Ferns has been airing online since 2008, with episodes leaking online every few months. The Funny or Die series has already seen some big names, including traditionally serious actors Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron and Bruce Willis as well as comedians Will Ferrell, Steve Carell and Ben Stiller. However, the series' output has certainly been slowing which suggests that the upcoming TV special Between Two Ferns: A Fairy Tale of New York, airing ahead of the Comedy Central's second annual Comedy Awards, might be the last hurrah for Zach and his two ferns.
And what a way to go for a show that started as a five minute improvised and totally awkward parody of celebrity talk shows. The first few guests, Michael Cera and Jon 'Stewart Turkeylink' Hamm, remain some of my favorite, however, this special is certainly not short on compelling interviewees. Between Two Ferns: A Fairy Tale of New York will feature appearances from The Daily Show's Jon Stewart, Virgin mogul Sir Richard Branson and 30 Rock's Tina Fey. Here are clips from the first two interviews between the ferns followed by a really telling quote from the third.
Yep. Even with the move to television and the increased budget, that is still the Between Two Ferns we have all come to know and love. So. Awkward. And definitely two good reasons to tune in to the special that airs this Sunday night. Jake Coyle of the Associated Press was able to catch up with Galifianakis, co-creator Scott Aukerman and even a few of the previous guests on the show including Carell, Theron and, from the upcoming special, Tina Fey, to find out what really goes on when the actors agree to appear between the ferns. The article is excellent, especially when detailing how the various actors prepared for the completely off-the-cuff and unscripted work of parody as well as the possible future of the show (or one somewhat like it). The best quote from the piece comes from upcoming guest Tina Fey whose analysis of Between Two Ferns, according to Zach, is spot on...
Between Two Ferns: A Fairy Tale of New York airs Sunday, May 6 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
