The final season of Spartacus gave us a small taste of the pirate life, but come 2014, Starz will be delivering a full drama dedicated to the sea-traveling treasure hunters. The first railer for Black Sails gives us a sampling of the adventure that awaits in Michael Bay's anticipated new series. As you might imagine, it includes sails, sex and swordplay, among other things.

Black Sails is executive produced by Michael Bay and will consist of eight episodes and is set twenty years before Robert Louis Stevenson's classic Treasure Island. The story follows Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) as the most brilliant and feared pirate captain of his day. Luke Arnold will play the classic character John Silver - who will one day go on to adopt the title of "Long" ahead of his name - a fast-talking young man who joins Flint's crew. Meanwhile, Zack McGowan will play the role of pirate Captain Charles Vane, a rival pirate to Flint. Hannah New plays Eleanor Guthrie, a beautiful and determined woman who runs a smuggling operation on New Providence. Jessica Parker Kennedy will play Max, a tortured young prostitute who sees the dark side of New Providence.

The character descriptions, added to the exciting footage we're seeing in this new trailer, tease what could be another great adventure for Starz, which appears to be looking to further explore period dramas and historical fantasy series with its original programming. Though Spartacus wrapped up last week, the network just premiered the thrilling new drama Da Vinci's Demons. It'll be interesting to see if Black Sails becomes another promising new series for the premium cable network. We have a while to wait for it though, as it's not expected to premiere until next year.
