With Armando Iannucci's Veep finally premiering last night (joining Girls and Game of Thrones), HBO's Spring Sunday night line-up is now in full effect, which means it's time to start showcasing the series coming this fall. And, if it comes to their award winning gangster drama Boardwalk Empire, it's time to once again call attention to its return this fall. The first glimpse at the highly anticipated third season of Terence Winter and Martin Scorsese's series was a brief tease called "New Year, New Rules".
An exercise in style over substance (probably since not to much is ready to show) and it was pretty stunning with its extremely shallow focus, black and white photography and bright back lights looking a little like fireworks. Well, you're always sure to see a lot of fireworks on HBO's Boardwalk Empire and, by the sounds of this tease, there'll be plenty flying between newlyweds, Nucky and Margaret Thompson. There is a real Godfather vibe to this preview, as the the couple's voice-overs do battle with a church scene unfolds in the background in between quick cutaways. "You're telling me how to conduct my affairs?"
The tease is once again focused on Steve Buscemi's Nucky, as well as bringing Kelly MacDonald's Margaret into the fold, but we unfortunately don't really get to see much of anyone else and the Boardwalk is a big place. No Michael Shannon's Van Alden, Stephen Graham's Capone and Michael K Williams' Chalky White. However, it is only thirty seconds long and there is a glimpse of Jimmy Darmody, or should I saw a flash, as well as Owen Slater (Charlie Cox) and the man himself Richard Harrow (Jack Huston). His half a face is worth ten full faces, easy.
Speaking of faces, there are plenty of new ones coming for the prohibition set gangster series that takes place in Atlantic City. Obviously, we have lost a few key characters from the Boardwalk so we'll need some new ones to sprout up and give Nucky a run for his money. And power. Bobby Cannavale is one such addition set to challenge Nucky for control of the empire. That is, if his wife doesn't cause his too much trouble first. He clearly didn't know what he was getting into with those nuptials. Ah, marriage. Boardwalk Empire will return for Season 3 on HBO this fall. It stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly McDonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Vincent Piazza and Michael Stuhlbarg. It was created by Terence Winter.
