"What shall we do, Mr. Thomson? What shall we do?"
Game of Thrones's third season came to an end on Sunday night but HBO made damn sure to let audiences know that there's plenty more where that came from. Not more GoT, (well, not until next year), just plenty more quality programming to look forward to this summer and fall. And among the many high-profile teases and trailers the premium cable network released on the weekend (including spots for The Newsroom, Eastbound & Down, Hello Ladies and, of course, True Blood) Boardwalk Empire saying "Welcome Back" was by far the most thrilling. Sorry Will, Kenny, Stephen and Sookie.
As short and effective as the first look at Season 4, this new tease once again uses its brief run time to catch up with old favorites and show off a few newcomers, all while painting the town red. What would a trailer for Boardwalk be without a little blood? The wide-shot of a guy getting his head blown off outside a doorway was a standout for me, both beautiful and disturbing, just what it feels like to watch the fantastic series.
And it's always exciting to see Richard, Chalky and Van Alden mix it up. Oh, and Nucky's with a new girl. Surprise, surprise. As for the newcomers, Jeffrey Wright's Dr. Valentin Narcisse gets the most time since his Harlem Kingpin will probably be the major antagonist for the season. There's also a quick wink from Ron Linvingston, a business man who runs into Gillian Darmody (the least likeable character on TV), but no sign of Patricia Arquette's speakeasy owner. At least not that I saw. Things were moving pretty fast. As they tend to do in AC.
Boardwalk Empire returns for its fourth season Sunday, September 8 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO. Created by Terence Winter, the series stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Vincent Piazza, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
