Given the choice between athletes or musicians, when it comes to non-actors as Saturday Night Live hosts, I prefer the musicians as they tend to be a bit less awkward. That's likely due to having much more experience entertaining and performing than the average professional athlete would have. This Saturday night, Bruno Mars will join the list of Saturday Night Live hosts that also served as the musical guest for the episode.

Ludacris did it. Jon Bon Jovi did it. MC Hammer did it. Taylor Swift, Elton John and Steve Martin did it. Heck, Britney Spears did it twice and Justin Timberlake did it three times. And this Saturday night, Bruno Mars will do it as he hosts and serves as the musical guest for the episode. Here's the promo, which features Fred Armisen and some hat humor.

I really hope they'll find an excuse or two to get Mars to sing in a sketch.

I'm always impressed by the hosts who also perform. You have to figure that it's hectic and exhausting doing a live show, particularly for the host as they're featured in almost every sketch and aren't likely to be used to the rush of live television. The musical performances and Weekend Update offer them a bit of a break from the action to regroup. In the case of Mars, like the host/musical guests that came before him, he'll be working a bit harder in the episode as he takes the stage to perform two songs between sketches.

Saturday Night Live airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC.
