During last season’s finale of The Office, among those who visited Dunder MIfflin in the hopes of earning the position of regional manager, was British actress Catherine Tate. NBC announced today that she’ll be coming back to reprise her role as Nellie Bertram.
In case your memory is rusty on Tate’s small part in The Office, she was the woman who suggested getting rid of all cubicle walls and job positions. When that didn’t go over well, she suggested more walls and that everyone be everyone’s boss. She, like a handful of others who tried to win the job recently vacated by Michael Scott, was not selected for the part, however, much like James Spader’s Robert California, it appears she’ll have a place on The Office regardless. As NBC's announcement says she's "joining the cast," I expect we'll see her around for most, if not all of the second part of this season.
According to NBC, Tate will join the series during the second half of the current season, when Nellie is brought by her friend Jo Bennett (aka Dunder Mifflin Sabre’s Chairman of the Board). NBC describes her as a “misguided special projects manager working directly for the corporate office and who very much enjoys the favortism received by Bennett.” That last part has me thinking she’s going to drive everyone crazy, which is a good thing. A happy Dunder Mifflin Scranton isn’t nearly as interesting or funny as an annoyed/frustrated Dunder Mifflin Scranton.
?For those of you who are unfamiliar with Tate’s comedy beyond her brief appearance on The Office last season, here’s a video from her British sketch comedy series The Catherine Tate Show:
