New Fox Series: Sit Down, Shut Up - Midseason 2009

It looks like The Cleveland Show isn’t the only new cartoon series set to hit Fox on Sunday nights next year. Also among the new shows Fox has greenlit is Sit Down, Shut Up. Mitchell Hurwitz (Arrested Development) has teamed up with Two and a Half Men’s Eric and Kim Tannenbaum to put this quirky sounding animated series together.

According to Fox’s website, here’s part of the description for the show:

“From Emmy Award-winning writer Mitchell Hurwitz ("Arrested Development") and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum ("Two and a Half Men") comes SIT DOWN, SHUT UP, an animated comedy that focuses on the lives of eight staff members at a high school in a small northeastern fishing town (Go Baiters!) who never lose sight of the fact that the children must ALWAYS come second. We watch them grapple with their own egos, needs and personal agendas, their petty insecurities and prejudices, unrequited loves, and ruthless battles for power - and that's just at the staff meeting.

With a distinctive new look - a combination of animation against a live-action backdrop - SIT DOWN, SHUT UP is a series for the young and old at heart. It lampoons modern society while exposing the dreams, flaws and struggling humanity of our first and most formative authority figures: teachers.”

I don’t know if it’s the premise of the series or the fact that people like Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, Cheri Oteri, Kenan Thompson and Henry Winkler are all providing the voices for some of the characters but this series actually sounds like it might be good enough to get me to tune in to Fox on Sunday nights. It’s been years since I’ve included Fox’s now fully animated Sunday night line-up in my regular TV watching schedule. If Sit Down, Shut Up turns out to be as funny (and clever with it’s lampooning “modern society while exposing the dreams, flaws and struggling humanity” of teachers) as it sounds, that might change.

Sit Down, Shut Up will begin airing midseason, 2009 at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday nights, taking over King of the Hill’s spot.
