We’ve known for a while that Game of Thrones would be seeing more changes during Season 5, and today actor Kit Harington, who plays Jon Snow on the show, revealed a big one. Apparently, The Red Woman Melisandre is going to fancy Jon Snow during the upcoming season. Here’s what he had to say in a recent interview with EW:
He’s incredibly intrigued by her. I find it endlessly funny that he really fancies redheads. One dies, and another comes along, and he’s all, “Hello!” There’s mutual interest between them that we see right from the get-go. There’s definitely a future there this season, with him and her. Who knows what Melisandre sees in people, but she’s obviously obsessed with bastards and noble blood. There’s obviously something a bit special about him in this story, and she locks in on that. So this season she tries to seduce him. That’s her power play. It’s going to be an interesting battle!
While Harington doesn’t explicitly say that he’ll make it into bed with the powerful woman, just the fact that Melisandre is seducing Jon is a big change from George R.R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series. In the novels, their relationship is complex, with Snow attempting power plays around her when various conflicts come up. She memorably even gives him a warning about seeing “ice” and “daggers in the dark.” That’s not exactly a recipe for sexual tension. Even on the show, Melisandre isn't a woman to mess with.
Jon Snow’s always had some “unpure” thoughts when it comes to women, and Game of Thrones might be looking to use Melisandre as a potential sexual interest over Val, a wildling with a beautiful face and a hard demeanor. While Snow hasn’t hooked up with Val in the books, either, he thinks she is “lovely” and it almost seems as if George R.R. Martin might be looking to tie them together in the future, despite Snow’s chastity vows.
What’s for certain is that Jon Snow is getting over the grief he initially felt when his former lover Ygritte was killed in battle. He’ll only bring her up briefly during Season 5, and Harington tells EW it is during a season when Melisandre tries to get in his pants.
And this season he only mentions her once—in a scene where he’s being come on to by Melisandre. He’s got bigger things at hand. If he’s missing her, it’s internal.
Obviously, we have no idea how Melisandre’s flirtations will come about, but we’ll be able to find out soon enough. Game of Thrones Season 5 is set to premiere this Sunday, April 12 at 9 p.m. ET. New episodes of Veep and Silicon Valley will follow. If you are interested in seeing what is coming up next, here’s what we know so far.
