Most horror series on TV these days take themselves very seriously, and in the case of shows like Hannibal and The Walking Dead, that makes perfect sense. Luckily, there’s Syfy’s zombified Z Nation, which has all the action and gore, but with a large helping of unadulterated fun included. A huge example of that tongue-in-cheek approach will be seen in Season 2, which will feature an over-the-top cameo from author George R.R. Martin as, you guessed it, a zombie.

To be expected, Martin will be playing himself for the cameo (which will come during the eighth episode), but with one small difference: this version of George R.R. Martin has not only already finished writing The Winds of Winter, the highly anticipated sixth novel in his massively popular A Song of Ice and Fire series, but he’s already promoting the seventh novel. It’s called A Promise of Spring, which is a play on the actual planned title for the book, A Dream of Spring. And the first look at his grotesque zombie self has Martin at a book signing, which is even more ridiculous. Take a peek at him in the below image, shared by EW.

That looks amazing, and I really hope his dialogue consists of just, “Arr, arr.” (Get it?) As an explanation for how the bestselling author appears in this universe, Martin will be the prisoner of a character named The Collector, who has a passion for capturing celebrity zombies, which sounds like something that would actually exist if the world was ever overrun by the undead. The Collector keeps Martin chained to a desk for evil purposes. Like maybe angering entire swaths of fans by killing off certain characters.

Here’s the reason Martin gave for making this cameo a reality.
I just want to prove to my fans that even in the Zombie Apocalypse, the Song of Ice and Fire books will still come out!

This will be the second Syfy cameo for Martin, as he also popped into Sharknado 3 for a few seconds to get eaten by a shark inside of a movie theater. And it makes good sense for him to show up on a zombie-related series, as he had some pretty good ideas for how the characters from The Walking Dead could survive.

Get your autograph books out, because Z Nation Season 2 will premiere on Syfy on Friday, September 11.
