Law and Order: SVU is in the middle of a shit show. Chris Meloni has ended his run as detective Elliot Stabler, Mariska Hargitay is only back part-time after being shafted by the Emmys year in and out. Ice-T, too has been busy filming a new reality show with his wife aptly called Ice Loves Coco, which premieres tomorrow on E! So, it was a good surprise to hear Ice-T’s Detective Fin Tutuola is locked into a contract with the Law and Order program for another year.

In most cases, viewers prefer consistency, and with SVU’s “stablest” force out of the picture, bringing Ice-T back as a player after SVU announced it would return next year is a big deal. Normally this would have been a no-brainer, but with Ice-T on board for his new reality show, it took a while to get contracts settled and nerves were high, which led to his contract becoming noteworthy.

The deal with Ice-T guarantees his return for the next two seasons, if SVU’s new lineup has its act together and can maintain or increase viewership enough to keep from getting canceled. According to Deadline, Law and Order: SVU might pick up another female lead, which would be a first for the Law and Order franchise and could very well bring audiences a dynamic worth checking out.
