Spike TV has happened upon a bona fide hit in Lip Sync Battle. The show features celebrities going head to head and lip-syncing songs of their choice to battle for bragging rights as the winner of a lip sync battle, and it’s the series that many of us never knew that we needed until we saw it. Fortunately for those of us who find ourselves caught in YouTube viewing spirals of past battles, while waiting for new episodes, Spike has officially renewed Lip Sync Battle for a 20-episode third season.
Although Season 2 is still underway, it’s not a huge surprise that Spike would opt for early renewal. Lip Sync Battle has become the most-watched original series in the history of the network and continually delivers a large and varied audience for the channel. Season 2 premiered on January 7, and the first two episodes earned Spike an average of 4.4 million viewers and is the top-ranked series in its time slot, with an impressive 3.1 rating in the all-important 18 – 49 demographic.
If the live viewing numbers aren’t enough to boggle the mind, the digital numbers will surely do the trick. Lip Sync Battle has amassed more than half a billion – yes, billion with a b – video streams since April of 2015, and over 50 million for the Season 2 premiere.
Of course, those 50 million video streams might turn out to be a big outlier. Lip Sync Battle is always worth watching, but the Season 2 premiere saw an epic faceoff of husband vs. wife with Channing Tatum going up against Jenna Dewan-Tatum. Most celebrity participants go all out for their performances, but the Tatum Takeover was something else entirely. Jenna Dewan-Tatum showed off some killer moves that resulted in her husband receiving a lap dance to Ginuwine’s “Pony” that left him slightly but very understandably flustered, and Channing Tatum channeled his inner Beyoncé for a rendition of “Run The World (Girls)” before bringing out the real Beyoncé for the assist in his big finish. Throw in Channing Tatum’s series of epic twirls in a performance of “Let It Go” from Frozen in full Elsa costume, and it’s no wonder that Spike got such crazy awesome numbers to kick off its second season.
The celebrities rotate in and out each week, but hosts LL Cool J and Chrissy Teigen are always around. LL Cool J’s reactions are always fun to watch, and his comments are unfailingly funny. For her part, Chrissy Teigen is super good at…appearing on camera in the middle of the performances.
Spike TV has found a recipe for success with Lip Sync Battle, and watching the rest of Season 2 will be all the more enjoyable for knowing that a Season 3 is in our future. The new season is set to tape later this year, so there’s no word just yet of a premiere date. Luckily, the second season is only just getting into swing. You can catch Lip Sync Battle on Thursday nights at 10 p.m. ET on Spike.
