Monster-in-Law May Come To TV - We're Sorry

Like me, I’m sure you were hoping for more news of unnecessary TV shows to appear soon. If nothing else they’ll be great for watching a bad idea go down in flames. Production company Benderspink, which is more known for films like The Ring, wants to translate the awful Monster-in-Law film for television. They are working with New Line to develop a ½ hour sitcom based on the Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda 2005 romantic comedy.

Benderspink has successfully produced one television series, ABC Family’s ‘Kyle XY.’ But these guys have the wrong idea to come up with television concepts. They’ve inked a continuing deal with Fox 21 to produce programming, and ‘Monster-in-Law’ is only once concept being batted around at the offices. Other projects on the table include HBO’s ‘Preacher,’ a VH1 show titled ‘Stephanie Spring,’ and a TV version of The Butterfly Effect for Sci-Fi.

Variety reports that the production company is interested in breaking through in the TV market more than they have. That’s an admirable ambition, but I’d think more original concepts like ‘Kyle XY’ is the way to go. Somehow a sitcom version of a horrible romantic comedy doesn’t sit well with me. Especially with sitcoms moving on from the traditional boring laugh track style. Even ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ which is a traditional style sitcom, has found a nice resting place between the old and new style comedies.
