Richard Hatem's Once-Defunct Wrecking Ball Project May Get A Second Life

The CW has a new project in the works, about a dashing young man from a political family who leaves the political life to solve amateur cases within a legal firm. In true detective style, the young man can’t solve the case alone, and so he enlists the help of a female intern who formerly worked for him on his Congressional campaign. Together, they will attempt to solve the whodunit case each week. While the CW may not be the first place audiences go for procedurals, the network seems to want to change that, even giving the project a script commitment.

The project, called Wrecking Ball, has been on the network’s radar for several years, now. However, when writer and producer Richard Hatem first introduced the concept during the 2007-2008 season, the network decided to pass. Now, Deadline is reporting the CW wants to give Wrecking Ball another go, and they’ve enlisted Grimm’s Hatem as well as his Heavenly writing partner, Ross Fineman, to executive produce.

Between USA’s Political Animals, Starz’s Boss, and the midseason NBC comedy 1600 Penn, there have been a slew of politically relevant shows making it to series over the past couple of pilot seasons. If Wrecking Ball makes it to the network, it should capably merge fans who like procedurals with people down with political themes, and could bring in a solid audience. If not, I’m hopeful Grimm would welcome Hatem back on its writing staff.

In case anyone was wondering, The CW’s sister network CBS—the king of all procedurals—actually owns the script for Wrecking Ball and will produce the project. Go figure.
