Ricky Gervais is all over the news these days thanks to his Golden Globes hosting gig and the somewhat overblown controversy that follows, but he's not about to slink away from the public eye just yet. Vulture got the scoop from The Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein that Gervais will be filming a cameo on the show that will air January 27, the first time he's appeared on the American spin-off of the show he created in its entire seven-season run.

"It's a little more than if you blink, you'll miss it, but if you don't set your TiVo right, you'll miss it," Lieberstein told them, which means-- once again, it's not like David Brent is going to be replacing Michael Scott on the show. The article says that David Brent will meet Michael Scott, but nothing in Lieberstein's quote specifies that Gervais will actually be appearing as his character from the original Office, so who knows how that might work. Either way, this is hugely exciting news for fans of either series, and for those of us who are dying to see how Carell and Gervais's awkward comedy skills will look when put head to head. They're promising more information on this later today, so stay tuned for more!

UPDATE: Now TV Line is reporting, from apparently an entirely different source, that Gervais will indeed be playing David Brent. So there you have it!
