All of the changes made to The X Factor after the first season seem to have paid off. Fox has renewed the talent competition show for a third season just ahead of the announcement of the top 16 acts, set to be revealed tomorrow. The episode was bumped to this week after a rain delay forced a schedule change in the MLB playoffs.

The X Factor’s US incarnation of the British format got off to something of a rocky start, with mentors (and host) being slashed left and right at the end of the first season. Brought in to fill the spots left empty by Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones were Britney Spears and Demi Lovato in the judges seats and the team of Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian as hosts. While the judges table on X Factor certainly hasn’t had the same kind of drama as Idol’s rumored Nicki Minaj/Mariah Carey feud, the team that includes Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid has created a buzz of its own. That buzz is mostly due to the addition of Spears to the lineup, with the singer having something of a history of dramatic and off-kilter behavior. So far, though, she seems to be holding her own.

Lopez and Kardashian will make their debut in the first live show, a two-and-a-half-hour special that will air next week, November 1st at 8 p.m. ET. With the third season now a certainty, the next question will be whether or not the same faces will return or if another cast shake-up is in the future.
