HBO generally allows its series to thrive without too much attention paid to ratings, but even diehard fanbases can’t make up for lagging numbers sometimes, and the premium cable network is pulling the plug on sophomore series Looking. But Patrick's story isn't done yet.

While this past Sunday night had the entire country abuzz over Kanye’s Grammy antics and The Walking Dead’s intense midseason premiere, things were far, far more quiet for HBO, where Girls, Togetherness and Looking put up positively dismal numbers.

Right from the start, HBO’s Looking was up against unfair categorization. ‘Oh, it’s just the gay version of Girls,’ they said. “They” being that mythical group of Internetters looking for a pithy logline to grab onto for opinion formulation purposes; but from second one of the series’ premiere, the comparisons rang hollow. If HBO was looking for a gay version of the Lena Dunham series, this was not it. And thank goodness for that.

Since this comparison is showing up in every single of review of HBO's Looking let's get it out of the way immediately. Except for the most superficial details, Michael Lannan's series about three gay men in San Francisco is nothing like Lena Dunham's Girls. "Looking For Now," the first episode of the new show, doesn't have a unique voice like Dunham's divisive multiple award winner and, for lack of a better word, is kind of milquetoast.

HBO’s upcoming series, Looking, finally nabbed a title and a premiere date, which means the subscription cable network is finally giving audiences trailers for the series. The first teaser trailer dropped last month, introducing us to a group of gay friends living in the gorgeous San Francisco Bay area. The first teaser was a little flashy and stylized, but the new trailer focuses on the emotions and amusing dialogue that will hopefully become trademarks of the show.

Lest you forget, HBO has the epic television game on lock. Between looking back at the year that was in 2013 and anticipating what’s to come going forward, the it’s-not-TV network managed to sneak a few surprises and teasers into their year-ending promo video. Turns out there’s plenty to be excited about that’s coming up in 2014, including a first look at season four of Game of Thrones, and new series The Leftovers, True Detective, Looking, Silicon Valley, and even John Oliver’s new one, too.

HBO’s latest series, Looking, has sprung forth its initial promotional materials onto the Internet, and well: get ready for a bunch of comparisons to Sex and the City and Girls because most of the Internet is wildly unoriginal. The sexually focused new comedy about three gay friends finding love in a modern-day San Francisco is another instance of the network (since we all know it’s not TV, it’s better because it's HBO) heralding the cause for breaking new ground in frank and sometimes outrageous depictions of life and love for the modern single young(ish) person.

As much as I love Boardwalk Empire and Eastbound & Down, I’m already ready for next year’s HBO programming, which will include new seasons of Game of Thrones and Girls. Speaking of the latter, we can now officially look forward to winter premieres. On Wednesday, HBO announced the premiere date for Girls’ Season 3, as well as new dramas True Detective and Looking.
