Coming off the recent news that Infinity Blade is turning profits for Epic Game Studios, the company also made public their position on the Stop Online Piracy Act: they're not for it. That's some good news for fans of all things Epic...and free speech.
According to Game Industry, Dana Crowley, the senior PR manager for Epic Games, made a statement on the company's official forum, stating that...
"Epic Games supports efforts that would stop overseas websites profiting from pirating our games, but we have to do that in a way that's compatible with freedom of speech and due process of law,"... "Thus, we do not support the current version of SOPA."
And to that, I say thank you Epic for sharing a whiff of common sense with the internet community. Unfortunately, I doubt the scent of that sense will reach the SOPA supporters.
One of the resons Epic made the statement public is because just recently the Electronic Software Association made it known that they do support the SOPA act and that instantly created a firestorm of protest from many developers and journalists, given that the ESA represents a number of individual companies, including Epic Games. In a way, people felt like the ESA was blatantly speaking on behalf and representing many within the association who do not share the same verve for the Stop Online Piracy Act.
Epic's lack of support for the current SOPA bill follows on the heels of other less vociferous protestors, including Nintendo and Sony.
