One of the sleuths over at Kotaku.com have uncovered something pretty interesting about “Xbox 360 exclusive” JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game). It’s not actually 360 exclusive! Remember that time everyone knew Assassin’s Creed was multiplatform, but Ubi Soft kept saying it was PS3 exclusive anyways? Remember the time Microsoft said Bioshock was exclusive, but it turned out multiplatform? Remember the time Metal Gear Solid 4 came over to the 360? It’s the same thing on all counts. Well, except for the MGS4 part…not yet anyways, but trust me it’s coming.
Why does this keep happening? Well it’s sort of a complex marketing venture, but the gist of it goes like this: whenever a game is released first for one system, it becomes associated with that system. Think of Oblivion, Metal Gear Solid 2, or Final Fantasy VII. They were all actually multiplatform games, but ask anyone what system they’re for and they’ll say Xbox 360, PS2, and PS1 respectively. This way, the consumer at large commonly thinks they can only get the game on the first system, as the second version is usually not advertised heavily.
Microsoft needs all the help they can get in Japan and Eternal Sonata would have gone a ways toward helping their imagine in gaming's most difficult to penetrate territory. I really don’t understand why MS doesn’t just pony up the dollars to nab the exclusive on this one.
Is this practice obnoxious? Sure. It’s a slap-in-the-face reminder that these companies don’t care who they deceive as long as they make a buck. But for now I guess we can just be happy that this solid looking title will be reaching a wider audience.
