Those of you still pissed off about how PS3 and Xbox 360 games cost $60 instead of the traditional $50 might be in for a nasty surprise in a few years. We could be in for another price hike.
PS3 and Xbox 360 games can cost about $20 to $30 million to make. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told CNBC that he believes average production costs will be $60 million by the time the next generation of consoles arrive. The reason for this isn't completely explained, but Guillemot seems to be implying that more powerful consoles will lead to more complex games. ""The next generation is going to be so powerful that playing a game is going to be the equivalent of playing a CGI movie today," he said. As CNBC points out, higher retail prices are one solution to rising costs. That's not the only way for companies to stay in the black, though. Ubisoft, for example, plans to take the special effects developed for games and sell them to film companies. However publishers and developer choose to deal with the problem, though, the fact remains that games have become more and more complex over the years. They still don't cost nearly as much to produce as the most expensive films but the development process for top games is quite elaborate. |
