GAMING BLEND
GameTap Editorial Closes Its DoorsAuthor: Steve West

I feel like I was just listening to Dana Jongewaard discuss GameTap’s future in the games editorial market, and now GameTap editorial is gone. And it wasn’t for a lack of talent either. Turner Broadcasting – who own GameTap – packed the brand new editorial staff with some top talent from the games journalism field. Less than a year after opening their doors the game is over.
Wired has confirmed that they’ve been given word that ”everyone at GameTap who is not in charge of running the games service will be let go in the middle of June.” This includes the aforementioned Dana Jongewaard, former GameSpot news editor Curt Feldman and longtime IGN editor Doug Perry. I have no idea what kind of business model Turner was hoping for with GameTap, but perhaps they see the writing on the wall. The internet is slowly being corporatized as the little guys are pushed out for the large corporations. It’s the way of the world and no one should be surprised. I guess Turner looked around and saw that places like IGN and Gamespot have already cornered the market and opted to bow out. |
