Mark Rein: Consoles Going Hardcore, Taking Away From PC

Look, I’ve heard the PC arguments all before. And to be honest there was a time when I cared. Back when the original Half-Life was big time I conceded that it would never work on consoles, at least not as they once were. But innovations and market changes have seen the gaming world change, and with it the relevancy of PC’s in the overall scheme of things. It’s a trend that Epic’s Mark Rein has noticed as well.

This isn’t to say that PC’s all of a sudden suck, or that phenomenal titles like Team Fortress 2 don’t have an advantage on the PC platform. The problem is that consoles are continually more capable of doing the deeds of PC. Hell, the CryEngine 2 is being shown on PS3 and Xbox 360 at GDC this year. This is only a few months after Crysis released to groans of GPU melting graphics. There really is no place where PC has the distinct advantage.

Speaking with the Guardian Unlimited Mark Rein said, ” When [Activision’s] Call of Duty 4 came out, I heard some of our guys sitting around talking about the great game they'd had last night and I'm like, 'Hey guys, what server are you playing on? I'd love to come and join you,' and they said, 'Just send us a friends request.' It was at that point I realized they were all playing it on console. Plus, the sales of the console versions are something like ten times the sales of the PC versions.”

PC games have performed underwhelmingly over the past few years. The aforementioned Crysis couldn’t cause a blip on the NPD charts, and COD4 sold exponentially better on consoles. Now that mods are coming to PS3, and perhaps Microsoft will loosen up in the next few years, the consoles have grown up. They’re no longer baby toys with cartoon games for after school time. Now you can have some mature 3am bloodlettings on your console with friends, and do it often times better with the standardization of console specs.
