Padres Pitcher: Wii Fit Helped Me Lose WeightAuthor: Pete Haas

San Diego Padres pitcher Heath Bell lost 25 pounds in the off-season and who does he credit for his fitness break-through? Well, himself, obviously, but also Wii Fit.
Someone crediting video games for helping them? Yes, we were shocked too. Bell said he gained an extra burst of motivation after weighing himself on a Wii Fit balance board. "It said I was obese," Bell said (via The Canadian Press). "If you're obese, it makes (your character on screen) obese. I was disappointed that I was that big. I literally took the game to heart. I did the work but I kind of credit the Wii Fit." People are inspired to lose weight by how their virtual avatars look? Imagine how many MMORPG players would be inspired to exercise if their characters' appearance were tied to their own weight/fat content, rather than letting everyone look like Greek gods and goddesses. Kills the escapism, sure, but if virtual humiliation helped a major league pitcher lose weight, maybe it can work for others too. |
