PlayStation Store's Top Games Of 2014 Announced

It looks like 2014 was a big year for Sony, with loads of games launching across its multiple digital platforms including the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and even old school favorites like PlayStation Classics. For those of you who are curious to know which titles lit up the virtual market the brightest, a new list has all of the details concerning the PlayStation Store’s top sellers for the past year.

There’s no denying that 2014 was a busy year for gamers, even if it might not go down in history as one of those 12 month periods that blew everyone’s socks off on a consistent basis. Handhelds saw a bit more love, especially thanks to the resurgence of more niche titles on platforms like the PlayStation Vita. The PlayStation 4 enjoyed its first year on the market while the PlayStation 3 moved into its twilight. And while not an overwhelming number of PlayStation Classics hit the virtual storefront in 2014, fans of older games were quick to snap up whatever became available.

But, as gamers, we tend to like to see things put into lists, ranked and broken down. Many of us like to know, unquestionably, that our favorite game made the top spot or, barring that, we seem to equally enjoy getting frustrated at those “undeserving” titles that topped our own selections. Sometimes we even enjoy seeing lessor known titles pop up somewhere in the ranking, letting us know that our love for Obscure Game X is shared by at least some portion of the masses.

Sony has catered well to those needs with a recent PlayStation Blog post, highlighting the PlayStation Store’s top performers of 2014. Expect a few obvious showings, and maybe even a couple of surprises. You can hit up that original post for the full list, but we’ll give you the details on the top five for each category below.

For the PS4, Destiny took the top spot on the virtual market, followed by Grand Theft Auto V. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare may not have sold as well as its recent counterparts, but that didn’t stop it from claiming the third place spot for 2014. Next up was the PS4 version of Minecraft, followed by The Last of Us Remastered.

Over to the PlayStation 3 and the list is a slightly altered version of the one for the PS4. For starters, Minecraft was the king of the hill on Sony’s last gen machine, followed by GTA V. Advanced Warfare took third, with Destiny in fourth and Battlefield 4 rounding out the top five.

Anime fans apparently love their handhelds, as the RPG Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment brought home the gold, followed by Minecraft yet again. The excellent shooter Killzone: Mercenary was third, with Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster wrapping up the list for the Vita.

As for PlayStation Classics, it looks like an old mascot still holds a special place in gamers’ hearts. Bookended by GTA: San Andreas in the top spot and Bully in the fifth, Crash Bandicoot, Crash Bandicoot 2 and Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped took places two through four, respectively.
