Simplygon Joins Epic's IPP For Unreal Engine

published: 2011-06-30 10:06:32
With the latest Unreal Development Kit, game designers and indie enthusiasts alike will have full access to the latest integrated partner for the Unreal Engine, called Simplygon. The added middleware tool enables designers to quickly test out a scene using various LODs for referencing, screen size information and more.

Dr. Michael Capps, president of Epic Games commented in the press release, saying…
“Simplygon saves developers hundreds to thousands of hours of manual art adjustment, so we are pleased to extend those benefits to our licensees with its incorporation into Unreal Engine 3,” ... “Simplygon is especially useful for converting high-end PC assets for deployment on mobile devices, which dovetails with Unreal Engine 3’s cross-platform strengths.”

The snazzy part about the whole thing is that even if you’re just using the UDK, you still have full access to the Simplygon tools, which will enable you to check out your project in various levels of details given that Simplygon removes as much information as possible while providing the necessary referencing info on the model(s). In plain terms, it’s like taking a PS3 character model file and then seeing how it would look as a PSOne character model file.

Simplygon is accessible via the Unreal Editor as part of the June UDK. You can check it out over at the Official Website.
