In one of those announcements that both surprises you and then makes you wonder if you even care, Joaquin Phoenix has quit acting. I know some of you think that based on his performances he quit acting after making Walk the Line (bam! hey ohhhhhh.) Seriously, though, Phoenix himself says he is done with the whole standing in front of the camera for millions of dollars. Who can blame him?
Phoenix was at a Paul Newman benefit (I figured Newman was beyond help, but you learn something new every day) when he ran into Extra. Rather than giving them the standard Hollywood puff responses, Phoenix dropped a bombshell. “I want to take this opportunity... also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor... I'm not doing films anymore." What will Phoenix do with his free time? He’s going to go the Dirk Diggler route. No, not porn, music. He added, “I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that."
So the real question is, obviously; is he serious? According to Casey Affleck, he is very serious. Affleck piped up during Phoenix’s interview, "I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff." Music and stuff is all you need these days. Remember those two guys in To Die For? They were awesome. So get to the theater and see Two Lovers, as it might be Phoenix’s last movie. Sure it will.
