While Super Bowl 50 may or may not have been a blast to watch, depending on which side you were rooting for, the commercials were as massively entertaining as expected. In particular, the crop of movie themed ads on display made quite the splash, and a recent report has pegged the 5 most socially effective spots of the night.
Deadline sifted through the social media numbers of leading platforms YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, and reported the rankings of the 15 properties that ran a spot Sunday night. Taking into account all the spots shown, including those aired during Pregame and Postgame coverage, the following titles were the most talked about throughout Super Bowl Sunday's social scene:
Captain America: Civil War
Independence Day: Resurgence
While Captain America: Civil War's top ranking finish is totally unsurprising, considering how anticipated the film has been since its announcement, the second place contestant is probably a shock to the folks at home. After four years without a film, and the ill-fated, Jeremy Renner led Bourne Legacy being the last entry in the series, the shine apparently hasn't dulled on the Bourne series. With a second place finish for the evening, Jason Bourne surprised the crowd with both its action, and its title, causing it to leapfrog over the likes of The Avengers and X-Men: Apocalypse. Looks like Universal's on track for another very pleasing summer without superheroes to lean on.
The top 5 found themselves rounded out by Independence Day: Resurgence, which surprisingly beat out Deadpool's Pregame spot by a decisive, but still small, margin. In fact, looking at the complete field of 15, it looks like ads shown during the second quarter of the Broncos v. Panthers match-up make up most of the top 5 field. The only ads that weren't shown during Q2 were Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse, leaving the other three in the top 5 dropping during the march towards Halftime. While the middle of the field is filled with mildly buzzed about films like Disney's The Jungle Book and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, the bottom of the barrel had one particularly surprising entry.
Despite a powerful showing with its surprise teaser trailer, 10 Cloverfield Lane's sneak attack during Super Bowl 50's Pregame was ranked among the bottom 5 films that were talked about on social media. Perhaps the element of surprise is what scuppered the film's ad potential, as well as the fact that it was show in the moments leading up to the game. Still, with the results reported above, you can see who won't have to spend so much money plugging their wares for this summer, but probably will anyway.
Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters on March 25th, and seeing as it's sitting in the field's dead center slot, we figured we'd give it the closing shout out for this round. However, if you want to see the top 5 movie ads of Super Bowl 50, you can see them on the next couple of pages.
