Avatar 2 Will Happen Underwater
We should have seen this coming. James Cameron’s obsession with aquatic life is near legendary. He’s spent millions running around in submarines and though you might think he developed his 3D technology because he loves blue cat people, the truth is he first got interested in the format primarily as a means of photographing underwater life. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that Avatar 2 will take place underwater.
Cameron revealed what his future Avatar plans are to the LA Times. He says, “Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.”
So what’s underwater? Pandora’s organically rich environments could literally spawn just about anything under the sea. Maybe there’s a whole new race of intelligent creatures down there, maybe we’ll find Jar Jar Binks. Or maybe the Na’vi have secret gills. If some Na’vi ride flying dragons and other ride horses, maybe there’s a seafaring tribe with a thing for porpoise power.
Going oceanic is just his plan for Avatar 2. For the third movie, it sounds like he may finally leave Pandora entirely. Cameron explains, “We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film.”
