The Avengers Expected To Cross The Billion Dollar Mark At The Global Box Office Today

A billion dollars buys a lot of shawarma. You know what else a billion dollars buys a lot of? Movie tickets. And as of today, it's looking like The Avengers will cross that Hulk-size milestone at the global box office. After this week's strong domestic showing at the box office, and what the film's been making overseas, success seems like an understatement when describing The Avengers performance.

Earlier today we shared word that the estimated box office totals for The Avengers this weekend were $29.1 million for Friday and $44.5 million for Saturday. According to Disney's announcement today, the total domestic box office take for the film is somewhere in the area of $373.2 million. Added to the $628.9 million internationally and that puts the number over $1 billion.

“We’re obviously thrilled with the global success of The Avengers,” said Robert A. Iger, Disney’s Chairman and CEO. “It’s a fantastic movie and an extraordinary franchise that will continue with more great stories and compelling characters for years to come.”

The announcement goes on to point out that the film has set numerous domestic box office records. Not only was it the fastest film to reach $200 million, doing it in three days, but it also sets the industry's all-time second weekend record with this weekend's estimated $103.2 million take.

With sequels in the works for The Avengers (in development), Captain America: The First Avenger (set for April 4, 2014 release) , Iron Man 3 (set for May 3, 2013) and Thor (set for November 15, 2013 release), The Avengers has set the bar high for these follow-ups, not only at the box office but also for the entertainment value of the film. The Avengers was an extremely entertaining movie, featuring one great character-moment after another. We shared some of our favorite scenes in this Great Debate (Spoilers!).
